We’re Recruiting New Trustees!

Are you passionate about making a real difference in Inverclyde? The Newark Trust is looking for voluntary Board Members to help guide our funding strategy across three priority areas: fighting child poverty, supporting young people with additional needs, and revitalising local community spaces.

Our Trustees play a massive part in making sure The Newark Trust does exactly what it set out to do: support the people of Inverclyde.

Think of the Board of Trustees as the guardians of the charity. Together, you’ll help steer our direction, make sure our money is spent wisely, and support our Charity Manager to help the Trust grow and stay agile.

Being a Trustee is a team effort. This means all decisions are made collectively as a group, looking out for the best interests of the charity and our community.

Role Description

  • Our Trustees play a vital role in ensuring the Trust achieves its core purpose. You will help steer our strategic direction, ensure robust governance, and work alongside our partners at the W.S. Society to uphold charity law.

    Just as importantly, our Board supports and constructively challenges our executive team, working closely with our Charity Manager to help the Trust grow, thrive, and remain agile in its local impact.

  • Who We Are Looking For

    We want to hear from candidates from all walks of life, irrespective of your career stage, background, or personal circumstances.

     

    You do not need previous board or governance experience—we will provide a full induction and ongoing training.

     

    We are looking for energy, enthusiasm, commitment, and fresh perspectives.

     

    We would particularly welcome individuals with a mix of skills or lived experience in any of the following areas:

     

    • The local Inverclyde community and third sector

    • Shifting the dial on child poverty

    • Supporting young people with additional support needs

    • Education

    • Local lived experience

     

    A Note on Diversity:

    Our board works best when it reflects the vibrant communities we serve. Because women are currently underrepresented on our board, we particularly welcome and actively encourage applications from women to help us achieve a balanced, diverse, and representative leadership team.

    • Meetings:

      • Attending 6 Board meetings annually (currently held in person at McLaren Packaging Ltd in Port Glasgow).

    • Strategy & Development:

      • Attending onboarding induction, required training, and our annual strategy day.

    • Ad-hoc Support:

      • Occasional participation in focused working groups or providing ad-hoc guidance to the executive team.

    • Visits

      • You will have the opportunity to visit the organisations that we support, to learn more about them and to see them in action.

Our Recruitment Process

Our recruitment process involves the following steps:

  1. Submit a Personal Statement (by Friday, 28th August)

Please submit a short statement covering:

  • Why you would like to join The Newark Trust*

  • The unique skills, energy, and experience you would bring to the role

  • What you hope to gain from this rewarding voluntary position

    2. Informal Discussion

An introductory chat with our Charity Manager to discuss the role in more detail.

  1. Trustee Review & Interview

Our Trustees will review all applications alongside feedback from the Charity Manager, and invite shortlisted candidates to meet with members of the Board.

  1. Final Decision & Feedback

The Board will make their final decision and provide feedback to all interviewed candidates.
