Setting Sail with able2sail!

The Newark Trust has invested £10,000 in local charity, able2sail.

The Newark Trust is delighted to support Inverclyde Families through a grant made to able2sail, a local charity set up to provide sailing experiences for disabled people, based out of Kip Marina.

able2sail purchased a specially adapted yacht in 2020 which allows access via a ramp to those in wheelchairs, allowing them to take families out on fantastic adventure on the River Clyde.

The funds from The Newark Trust will be used to give opportunities for families from Inverclyde to experience sailing, as well as to support the day to day running costs of the charity.

Logan, from Greenock, has enjoyed a trip out on the River Clyde since the grant was made. He, together with his family, including brother Zach enjoyed a very special trip together following which his grandmother said:

"We all had a fabulous day on Wednesday, especially Logan. After we got off the yacht he kept saying ‘I loved that boat Nan’. The crew made us all feel so welcome and at ease. Zach had the best time steering the boat. This is so kind of everyone giving up their free time to allow others to enjoy this experience on the yacht."

Steve Railton, one of the team from McLaren Packaging who volunteers for able2sail introduced the charity to The Newark Trust, and said:

“I’ve always had a love of the outdoors, especially the sea and when I came across the able2sail team at Inverkip I saw this an opportunity to share this passion.

I completed my 2 days crew training and was incredibly impressed by the professionalism and dedication of the crew and their attention to detail, especially the safety and wellbeing of the clients.  I was aware of The Newark Trust through the company’s internal communications and thought that able2sail ticked a lot of the prerequisites for funding support.

I’m delighted that the trust has been able to support this local charity, which, being almost entirely volunteer based, means all the funds will go directly enabling more and more people who, without charities like able2sail would not be able to get out on the water and experience what we sometimes take for granted.”

Steve Railton (McLaren Packaging Group), Claire Stone (The Newark Trust) and Gordon Tatnell (able2sail).

Supporting able2sail is an exciting starting point for The Newark Trust, and we are always on the look out for opportunities to support local charities and organisations that can help to affect positive change in Inverclyde.

Our current focus areas are fighting child poverty, supporting young people with disabilities and  supporting communities.
